Time: 2 PM -- 3:00 PM
The Tween Book Club will read The Riverman by Aaron Starmer. Twelve-year-old Alistair is good at keeping secrets. Fiona, his neighbor, chooses him to share her secret about Aquavania, a parallel, timeless world where stories are born. The Riverman is the first in a planned trilogy. The 2014 novel has received numerous starred reviews in library journals.
By July 21, book club members should read up to page 164 of the novel
and use the prompts/ideas below to start a dialogue about the book. (You don’t need to answer all the questions or every part of a question.)
1. Think of Alistair and his life. How would you describe his relationship with his family members? his friends? Do you think of him more as an introvert or an extrovert? Who are his best friends? Who is he most comfortable with? Give examples from the text to support your answer. Why do you think Fiona and Kyle choose to share their secrets with Alistair?
2. Why doesn't Alistair believe Fiona Loomis's tale of Aquavinia? How does he explain the fact that she has told him this story if it is not true? Do you believe the story? Why or why not? Support your answer with details from the text. Do you think this novel is a realistic novel with a girl making up a story or do you think it is a fantasy and that Aquavinia exists? Explain.
3. Alistair has some real concerns about Dorian Loomis? Why? Do you think he is evil? What other explanations can there be for his behaviors?
