The Library's Book Club for middle school students is reading the award-winning The Apothecary by Maile Meloy, a historical fantasy set in 1952 London during the Cold War. In this mystery/adventure, Janie Scott and Benjamin Burrows set out to save the world from impending nuclear doom. Named an ALA Best Book for Young Adults in 2012, the novel was followed by its sequel The Apprentices in 2013.
By July 15, participants should read to page 170 of the novel and use the prompts/ideas below to start a dialogue about the book. (You don’t need to answer all the questions or every part of a question.)
1. Throughout the story, we are told that both Janie Scott and Benjamin Borrows are "adventurous" and "courageous." But what other words would you use that describe them? Support your answer with details or quotations from the text. Do you think Janie and Benjamin are more alike or different from each other? Support your answer.
2. How would you describe Janie's relationship with her parents? How different is their relationship from most young teens' relationships with their parents today? Give examples from the text.
3. Which other characters do you enjoy learning about? Describe at least two others and how they add interest to the story for the reader.
