Dates: Thursdays, July 7 and 21
Time: 7:30 PM--8:30 PM
The High School Book Club will read 100 Sideways Miles by Andrew Smith.
Destiny takes a detour in this quirky and heartbreakingly hilarious coming-of-age novel. After an unlikely accident, Finn Easton’s head is not quite right, which causes him to see the world through miles instead of minutes. Feeling trapped inside his author-father's novel, Finn takes a road trip with Julia that changes everything.
By July 14, book club members should read up to page 161, and use the prompts/ideas below to start a dialogue about the novel. (You don’t need to answer all the questions or every part of a question to participate.)
1. Describe Finn's relationship with his father and his relationship with his step-mother. What do you think of the parenting style presented in the book? Do you think that the author paints a realistic picture of family life for the average teen? Support your answer with the text.
2. Finn and Cade are best friends, despite having very different personalities. Describe their characters. Give examples from the text that point out their differences. Why do you think they are attracted to each other as friends?
3. Describe the history of the Saint Francis Dam, as depicted in the novel. Why do you think Finn is interested in the the disaster that occurred there in 1928?
